Weigh Station Bypass Programs
PrePass
PrePass uses transponder technology to allow qualified trucks to bypass weigh stations and inspection sites at highway speeds. Carriers with good safety records and compliance history are more likely to receive bypass signals. The system evaluates carrier safety data, vehicle credentials, and size/weight in real time.
Drivewyze
Drivewyze PreClear is a smartphone or ELD-based weigh station bypass service. It works similarly to PrePass but uses GPS instead of fixed transponders. It covers more sites than PrePass and can provide bypass signals at over 800 locations across North America.
What to Expect at a Weigh Station
Common Inspection Triggers
- Vehicle appears overweight or has visible damage
- Carrier has poor CSA scores or out-of-service rate
- Random selection by the inspection system
- Expired or missing credentials (registration, IFTA, insurance)
- Visible safety violations (flat tires, broken lights, unsecured cargo)
- Driver log anomalies flagged by ELD data
Hours of Operation
Most weigh stations operate during business hours (typically 6 AM - 10 PM), but hours vary by state and season. Some major stations on high-volume interstates operate 24/7. Stations may close during holidays, severe weather, or when fully staffed inspections are not needed.
Levels of Inspection
- Level I - Full inspection (driver and vehicle)
- Level II - Walk-around driver/vehicle inspection
- Level III - Driver-only inspection (credentials and logs)
- Level IV - Special inspections (one-time examination)
- Level V - Vehicle-only inspection (driver not present)
